i
FLUOR DANIEL GTl
January 16, 1997
Ms.Margaret Lagorio
San Joaquin County Public Health Services
304 E.Weber Avenue,Floor 3
P.O. Box 388
Stockton,CA 95201-0388
Subject: Pre-Tank Lining Site Assessment Requirements
Southland Store#17334 and Southland Store#20632
4501 North Pershing Avenue 4627 Da Vinci Drive
Stockton,California Stockton,California
FDGTI Project#020700377 FDGTI Project#023305319
Dear Ms. Lagorio:
Per your conversation with Jaff Auchterlonie,The Southland Corporation (Southland) is planning to line the
underground storagetanks(USTs)and replace product;lines and dispenser's as part of a fueling system
upgrade at the two subject sites. To obtain permit approval from the San Joaquin County Public Health
Services(SJCPHS)for tank lining,FluorDaniel GTI proposes to conduct a pre-tank lining site assessment
at the two subject sites. The purpose of the site assessment is to determine if a release of petroleum
hydrocarbons associated with the USTs has impacted the soil or groundwater beneath the sites.
The scope of work would include drilling six angled soil borings beneath the three 10;000-gallon gasoline
USTs at the two sites. Attachment 1 includes site maps of the two subject sites with the proposed boring
locations. The slant borings will be drilled to a:vertical depth of 15 feet below surface grade,or 3 feet
below the end of each tank. One soil sample-will be collected at the maximum depth of each boring. Soil
samples will be submitted to a State Certified Laboratory to be analyzed.for benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, and total xylenes(BTEX),methyl-tert-butyl-ether(MTBE), and total petroleum
hydrocarbons-as-gasoline(TPH-G). If groundwater is encountered in the soil borings during drilling,a grab
water sample will be collected and submitted for laboratory analysis as described above.
Upon your approval of our proposed scope of work,a separate workplan for the two sites will be submitted
to the San Joaquin County Public Health Department. Upon completion,of the work at the site, a report
J64
0377tank.ltr(Sthl-56)
1401 Halyard Drive, Suite 140 /West Sacramento, CA 95691 USA (916) 372-4700 FAX(916) 372-8781
