ORC TECHNICAL BULLETIN # IV.3
Oxygen Release Compound,ORC®
Computer Modeling Results
of Oxygen Distribution in an Aquifer
The following graphical representations are generated by a unique version of the Cleary
Ungs model, adapted for interactive, menu driven use The program is written in Visual
Bask with three dimensional graphical output The spatial condition is two dimensional
- along the barrier axis and downgradient Molecular concentrations, whether they be
oxygen or contaminant are represented in the third (height) dimension The three
dimensional images can be rotated and viewed from any position
Given a, 1) groundwater seepage velocity, 2) initial oxygen concentration and, 3) the
initial contaminant concentration, one can generate the following for a specified time
period and spatial array.
1 Oxygen distribution as a function of advection, dispersion and retardation without
utilization
2 Oxygen distribution as a function of advection, dispersion and retardation with
utilization
3 Reduction of dissolved-phase contaminants in relation to the available oxygen
Figures 1 and 2 represent the distribution of oxygen at 30 and 90 days respectively, after
insertion of ORC filter socks into a well The a-d series in each figure, are for the 4
different groundwater velocities as indicated In all cases, an initial oxygen
concentration of 20 ppm is used and is mildly conservative based on actual field
measurements Oxygen contours are viewed from the top down, although they can be
rotated into a three dimensional view as shown in later figures. The top-down view
facilitates the planning of well spacing which is the major objective in applying the
model. The remaining Figures illustrate - using a single groundwater velocity of 0.5 feet
per day - how a series of wells work together to form an oxygen plume at 90 days
(Figure 3) and how a constant BTEX source at 5 ppm is reduced at 90 days (Figure 4).
REG EN ES IS -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bioremediation Products 27130A Paseo Espada, Ste 1407, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675
Phone 714-443-3136 Fax 714-443-3140
