Kennedy/Jenks Consultants
• Hearing protection will be worn if a preliminary noise survey or past experi-
ence indicates that maximum noise levels will exceed comfortable levels at
any time during site operations.
Additionally, field personnel should not enter any excavations exceeding 5 feet in depth
unless the excavations are properly shored, braced or sloped and a safety ladder is
provided for ready access or egress.
KIJ personnel will not enter any confined space, defined by OSHA as the concurrent exis-
tence of the following conditions, without advanced specific preparation, planning, training,
and supervision by the Regional Safety Supervisor.
(1) The space is large enough and so configured that an employee can bodily
enter and perform assigned work; and
(2) The space has limited or restricted means for entry or exit (for example,
tanks, vessels, silos, storage bins, hoppers, vaults, and pits are spaces that
may have limited means of entry); and
(3) The space is not designed for continuous employee occupancy.
4.2 Potential Chemical Hazards
VOCs have been detected in groundwater and soil at the site. Field personnel could poten-
tially be exposed to VOCs and other chemicals at the site by direct contact with soil or
groundwater, through inhalation of dusts containing organic chemicals, or through inhala-
tion of organic chemical vapors. Field personnel will minimize potential chemical hazards
by (1) avoiding direct contact with groundwater and soil, (2) performing air monitoring to
determine necessary level of personal protective equipment and (3) minimizing generation
of dust. Ingestion of particulate matter containing chemicals is another general exposure
route. However, for the site personnel, the potential for this type of exposure is minimal.
Safe work practices, including restriction of eating, drinking, or smoking to certain times
and places will be enforced at the worksite.
Groundwater Samples. The maximum concentrations of VOC detected in the groundwater
in monitoring wells on the site were 1.1 ppm for TPH, 0.43 ppm for Benzene, 0.0012 ppm
for Toluene, 0.026 ppm for Ethylbenzene, and 0.10 ppm for Xylene. Detected
concentrations of the above-named VOCs for each monitoring well are presented in
Table 1.
Soil Samples. Various VOCs have been detected in subsurface soil samples collected at
the site. The VOCs and their highest reported concentrations are listed in Table 2.
Available Threshold Limit Values (TLV) or Permissible Exposure Limits (PEL) published for
the chemicals detected in soil and groundwater are listed in Table 3.
g:\jobs19405491H&Sp1anlp1an 5 940549.00
