I
I
gasoline using DHS Leaking Underground Fuel Tank(LUFT) methods and for benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) by EPA Method 8020
Equipment used for drilling and sampling will be cleaned prior to beginning of work All
sampling equipment will be decontaminated between each sampling event using a non-phosphate
detergent, an ivory soap solution, and a de-ionized water rinse The drill cuttings,
decontamination fluids and groundwater generated during drilling and sampling will be placed
in 55-gallon drums and stored on-site
On the day following the soil probe sampling, a hollow stem auger drill ng will be utilized to
construct one vadose zone well to approximately 25 feet below grade in the vicinity of the zone
containing the highest concentration of petroleum hydrocarbons
The advantage of utilizing the soil probe system for the soil investigation (rather than a hollow
stem auger drill ng) is that the soil probe system results in less impact to the paved surface and
no soil cuttings are generated, thus, soil disposal costs are eliminated The advantage of
utilizing the mobile laboratory unit, rather than sending soil samples off-site for analysis, is that
a greater amount of soil samples can be analyzed at a lower cost, thus, resulting in more data
enabling an efficient remedial system design
Task 2 - Pilot Test
An SVE pilot test will be performed to develop adequate data to assist in the evaluation of SVE
as the preferred remedial option at the subject site A San Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution
Control District permit wavier will be acquired for the test The one day pilot test will utilize
a portable air extraction blower system to induce a vacuum pressure on the soil, by extracting
air from the vadose well Measurements will be made during the test for several parameters that
will allow evaluation of SVE feasibility to remediate the impacted soil
The air extraction rate, pressure response, radius of influence, and concentration of volatile
organic compounds will be recorded All air emissions will be abated during the test by two 200
pound granular activated carbon (GAC) canisters Regularly spaced PID readings will be taken
from the air discharge from the GAC to assure that no VOC emissions are released to the
atmosphere
These data will allow the initial design of a full-scale SVE system for the site The pricing and
capability assessment of an SVE system based on this pilot test will allow for an efficient
feasibility study
M91ed2 4
