A soil sample collected by TreaTek,Inc from beneath the southern end of the northernmost
underground storage tank contained the maximum concentrations of petroleum
hydrocarbons, where TPH as gasoline was reported at 785 mg/kg, benzene at 0 445 mg/kg,
toluene at 1030 mg/kg, ethylbenzene at 3.770 mg/kg, and xylenes at 4.580 mg/kg TPH as
diesel was reported from only one soil sample, a composite soil sample collected from a soil
stockpile, at a concentration of 367 mg/kg.
1.3 Purpose
rThe scope of work performed was designed to define the vertical and horizontal extent of
soil contamination previously detected at the site, to determine whether groundwater had
been impacted, and to collect information required to determine whether remedial actions
may be required. The work was performed following the preliminary site assessment
guidelines presented in the State Water Resources Control Board(now CAL-EPA)"Leaking
Underground Fuel Tank (LUFT) Field Manual" and the Regional Water Quality Control
Board "Regional Board Staff Recommendations for Initial Evaluation and Investigation of
Underground Tanks".
r
2.0 AGENCY RECORD REVIEW OF NEIGHBORING SITES
Agency records related to underground tanks (i e. tank removal, installation, or testing),
hazardous materials use or storage, hazardous materials spills, and remedial investigations
or clean-up activities were researched for the subject property and selected neighboring
sites The nearby saes which were researched were selected based on existence of
underground fuel storage tanks and proximity to the subject site. The nearby sites selected
for review included the former Exxon Service Station located at 4444 North Pershing
Avenue, approximately 200 feet east of the subject property, the Shell Service Station
located at 4445 North Pershing Avenue, approximately 150 feet southeast of the subject
property, the 7-11 located at 4501 North Pershing Avenue, approximately 100 feet east of
the subject property, and the car wash located approximately 75 feet south of the subject
property.
2.1 Agency Records
' McLaren/Hart personnel contacted the PHS/EHD for information on potential
environmental impacts of nearby sites to the subject property. Mr Michael Collins of the
PHS/EHD stated that no file exists for the car wash located south of the subject property,
and provided information on environmental investigations conducted at the subject property
and other nearby saes
2 11 Exxon Service Station
The underground storage tanks were removed from the former Exxon Service Station on
July 22, 1986, and following review of the tank removal soil sampling analytical results,
iiiaicai 3
