Soil samples were collected at approximately five foot intervals
. commencing at five ft using a split spoon tube sampler loaded with
pre-cleaned brass tubes . The sampling equipment was decontaminated
using tri-sodium phosphate solution (TSP) and twice rinsed with the
last rinse using distilled water prior to sampling.
Soil samples were collected in the lowest brass liner and preserved
by covering both ends with Teflon tape, capping with plastic caps
and sealing the caps with plastic tape. The soil samples were
labeled and logged under Chain-of-Custody (COC) control. They
were stored in a cooler with ice, transported to a state certified
laboratory for analysis with COC documentation.
The soil samples were labeled as to well and depth, ie the soil
sample collected from MW-1 at the 5 foot level was marked MW-1 51 .
The soil cuttings were stored on and covered with visqueen awaiting
the results of the soil analysis.
Groundwater Sampling
On June 5, 1995, six days after the installation of the wells, John
N. Alt and John P. Cummings of JPCA went to the site to collect
groundwater samples. Michael Infurna of SJCEHD was also on site.
The wells were developed by pumping, purging and collecting the
purged groundwater in 55-gallon drums labeled awaiting analysis.
• Each of the wells was pumped to dryness three times. The wells
were slow in recovering but the wells were considered stabilized
when the following indicator parameters were within the ranges
established below. Temperature (plus or minus 0. 5 degrees
Centigrade) , pH (within plus or minus 0. 1 pH unit) and Specific
Conductance (within plus or minus 5% of the reading range) . Well
data sheets are contained in Appendix A.
The pump was decontaminated using tri-sodium phosphate solution
(TSP) and twice rinsed with the last rinse using distilled water
prior to being used in each well.
Three groundwater samples, one from each well, was collected by a
clean dedicated bailer, placed in two 40 ml VOAs with Teflon septa,
labeled, held in a cooled (4 Degrees C) ice chest and transported
to a State Certified Laboratory, under COC documentation, for
analyses.
Chemical analysis
The soil and groundwater samples collecred were analyzed for Total
Petroleum Hydrocarbons as Gasoline (TPHG) and Benzene, Toluene,
Ethylbenzene and Xylene (BTEX) . The groundwater samples were
analyzed for TPHG by EPA Method 8015 modified with purge and trap
preparation 5030 (GC/FII?) with detection limits of 50ug/l. EPA
Method 602 will be utilized for BTEX with a detection limit of
6
