05 / 11 / 98 MON 14 : 23 FAX 910 304 1889 SECOR- SACRAMENTO 008
ATTACHMENT A
FIELD AND LABORATORY PROCEDURES
i
Soil Sampling
Soil samples will be collected by advancing 2-inch-diameter brass sample liners into
undisturbed soil, or soil removed from an excavation by a backhoe bucket. Soil samples
for chemical analysis will be retained in the brass liners, labeled, and capped with Teflon
sheets and plastic end caps. The samples will then be sealed in zip-lock bags, placed on
ice, and transported to the laboratory accompanied by the appropriate chain-of-custody
documentation.
Soil Sampling for Stockpiled Soil
Soil samples will be collected by advancing 2-inch diameter brass sample liners
approximately six inches to one foot into the soil stockpile. One composite sample (4- 1)
will be collected per approximately 100 cubic yards of soil. Soil samples for chemical
analysis will be retained in the brass liners, labeled, and capped with Teflon sheets and
plastic end caps. The samples will then be sealed in zip-lock bags, placed on ice, and
transported to the laboratory accompanied by the appropriate chain-of-custody
documentation.
Laboratory Analysis of Soil Samples
Analysis for total petroleum hydrocarbons calculated as gasoline (TPH-g) will be
performed by modified EPA method 8015 . Analysis for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene,
and xylenes (BTEX compounds) will performed by EPA Method 8020. Oxygenates
including MtBE will be analyzed by EPA Method 8260. These analytical methods utilize
gas chromatography and flame-ionization detection, photo-ionization detection or mass
spectrometry.
