Soil Sampling for Stockpiled Soil
Stockpile soil samples were collected by advancing four 2-inch diameter brass sample liners
into the soil stockpile One 4 to 1 composite sample was collected per approximately 100
cubic yards of soil Soil samples for chemical analysis were retained in the brass liners,
labeled, and capped with Teflon sheets and plastic end caps The samples were then sealed in
zip-lock bags, placed on ice, and transported to the laboratory accompanied by the
appropriate chain-of-custody documentation
Laboratory Analysis for Soil Samples
Analyses for TPHg, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes (BTEX compounds), and MtBE
were performed using EPA Method 8015/8020 Fuel oxygenates were analyzed by EPA
Method 8260 Analysis for lead was done using EPA Method 6010A
Groundwater Sampling Procedures
The sampling procedure for each well consists first of measuring the water level and
checking for the presence of separate-phase hydrocarbons (SPIT), using either an electronic
indicator and a clear TeflonO bailer or an oil-water interface probe Wells not containing
. SPH that do not have submerged screens are then sampled without purging Wells that have
submerged screens are purged of approximately three casing volumes of water (or to dryness)
using a centrifugal pump, gas displacement pump, or bailer The equipment and purging
method used for the current sampling event are noted on the attached field data sheets
During purging, temperature, pH, and electrical conductivity are monitored in order to
document that these parameters are stable prior to collecting samples After purging, water
levels are allowed to partially recover Groundwater samples (both purge and no purge) are
collected using a TeflonO bailer, placed into appropriate EPA-approved containers, labeled,
logged onto chain-of-custody documents, and transported on ice to a California state-certified
Iaboratory The groundwater sample obtained from SB-1 was collected using a hydro-punch
sampling device that used o-rings or Teflon tape around the threads of the rod points to
prevent leakage of non-target zone water A rubber shield was place over the hydro-punch
tip or O-ring at the tip point to prevent leakage of non-target zone water The hydro-punch
was driven 1 to 2 feet into the formation After confirming with a water level indicator that
no water had entered the hydro-punch rods, the screen was pulled back and exposed, allowing
water to enter Water was collected within a stainless steel bailer and containerized within
HCL preserved 40 ml voas
077 42064 222/well install doc February 19,2002
