GEOMATRIX
5.2.4 Preparation of Building Pad
Because of the nature of the soils at the site, we recommend that the pump station be founded
on a pad of compacted granular fill material (i.e., crushed rock or aggregate base material).
The purpose of the pad is to provide a uniform bearing surface for the completed structure, as
well as to provide a reasonably sound working surface. If the exposed soil surface has not been
significantly disturbed by construction equipment (as determined by the engineer), is uniform,
and would provide a good bearing surface forthe planned pump station, the exposed surface
should be compacted with at least six passes of a smooth, vibrating drum roller that weighs no
less than 10,000 pounds to provide a reasonably smooth surface for the placement of the
granular material. For"tight" excavations or hard-to-reach locations in the excavations, other
compaction equipment may be utilized.
If the exposed soil surface has been disturbed by construction equipment (as determined by the
engineer), is not uniform, or would not otherwise provide a good bearing surface.for the
planned structure, the upper 8 inches of the exposed soil surface should be scarified and/or '
bladed until it is uniform and free of large unbroken clods of soil. The moisture content should
be brought to within the optimum and +3% of the optimum and compacted with equipment
suitable for the soil and site conditions to not less that 90% of the maximum dry density, as
determined by ASTM Method D1557. The compacted surface should be bladed/trimmed and
rolled with a smooth drum roller to provide a reasonably smooth surface upon which to
construct the pad.
A layer of granular fill that conforms to the requirements of aggregate base material or crushed
rock should be placed over the area of the pad, as described below in Section 5.2.5 - Fill
. Materials and Compaction Criteria. The layer of granular fill should be at least to 12 inches
thick and should extend beneath the perimeter wall footings. '
5.2.5 Fill Materials and Compaction Criteria
p .
We anticipate that four principal fill types will be utilized at the site. These are (coarsest to
p
finest):
f
L1. crushed rock
2. permeable material
3. aggregate base material
4. site fill.
r
1:1Aroject15000s153131LE W Is-MAN.DOC
N
