June 26, 2000
Mr. Tim O'Brien
Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board
3443 Routier Road
Sacramento, CA 95827-3003
MONITORING WELL INSTALLATION WORKPLAN
EASTSIDE WINERY,LODI,SAN JOAQUIN CO.
A. General Information
Locations and Rationale
Monitoring wells are being installed at this site to determine to what extent,if any,
wastewater from the winery impacts groundwater. Wastewater from the winery proper is
routed to a network of four contiguous excavated ponds(A 1 through A4) located next to
the Mokelumne River. The ponds are managed to facilitate infiltration and all the water
placed in them does, in fact, infiltrate. Occasionally, wastewater is also generated by a
distillery at the winery site. The distillery wastewater, when it is generated, is routed to a
different infiltration area. The distillery wastewater infiltration area (field B)is
surrounded by a low berm and is situated within a meander of the river. The infiltration
ponds and field are shown on Figure 1. The"A" series ponds are excavated and are
capable of holding about 10 feet of water. Infiltration area`B"is not excavated and the
surrounding berm is only about 1 foot above grade.
The groundwater table at the site is under the influence of the river. During the site visit
in May,the bottom of pond A4 was below the water table. Later in the dry season all of
the ponds can be entered with machinery. The expected relationship between the river
and the water table is that the river, which always flows, maintains a water table sloping
away from the river toward the south or southwest.
On the basis of that conceptual model of the groundwater system it is proposed to place
two monitoring wells, one at the southwest corner of each infiltration area. The proposed
locations of these two monitoring wells are shown on Figure 1.
Survey details
The site is situated in T4N,R7E, southeast quarter section of Section 31.
The site is on the floodplain of the Mokelumne River. It is level at an elevation of about
10 feet(MSL).
