East-Side Winery Spill Investi*n 2 • 8 May 2001
know where their wastewater discharged, they assumed it went into the wastewater ponds by the river
(presumably the East-Side Winery ponds). A Chatfield Winery maintenance worker stated that another
employee had made a piping change in the last year. The piping change was not further described.
Based on my observations, there appears to be unknown piping connections between the two facilities.
SUMMARY:
East-Side Winery must evaluate its wastewater treatment, conveyance, and disposal system to prevent
future discharges of wastewater. Because East-Side Winery's wastewater ponds are located
approximately 2,500 feet north of the winery facility, special precautions to prevent vandalism are
justified. East-Side Winery must implement all improvements required to prevent future spill events.
Chatfield Winery was previously unknown to the Bard and has beeii contacted regarding the need for
Waste Discharge Requirements (WDRs). Until WDRs can be adopted, Chatfield Winery has been
ordered to cease all discharges.
l
Timothy R. O'Brien
Associate Engineering Geologist
Approved:
