The Site location is shown on Figures 1 and
2. This Site Characterization Work Plan is designed to confirm environmental impacts
resulting from operations conducted on the Lima Ranch property.
The property to the west of the Lima Ranch which is owned by Coldani has been
environmentally impacted by high nitrate concentrations in the groundwater. The suspected
source of the nitrate impacts is the dairy operations conducted on the Lima Ranch. The focus
of this Work Plan will be (i)to confirm and quantify the environmental impacts resulting from
the historic and current dairy operations on the Lima Ranch and(ii)to characterize the extent
of the impacts.
1.1 Site Background
The Lima Ranch has operated at its current location since 1938. According to the Lima
Ranch internet homepage, the dairy operation involves the handling and milking of
approximately 1,300 cows. The Ranch has approximately 1,500 acres of associated property
under lease which is used for farming to produce animal feed and to act as a resource for
disposal of the large quantity of wastes generated through the dairy operation. Corn, oats, and
alfalfa crops are fertilized with partially treated wastes from the waste holding ponds. Figure
3 shows the current layout of Lima Ranch.
The waste management system is reported to be in compliance with applicable laws (Lima
Ranch website); although no data have were available to verify compliance at the time of the
production of this Work Plan. In addition, it appears that a comprehensive site
characterization of environmental impacts has not been conducted for the Lima Ranch. This
Work Plan is designed to confirm and quantify environmental impacts that have resulted from
over 70 years of dairy production at this site.
1.2 Local Geology and Hydrogeology
The Lima Ranch Property is located in the San Joaquin Valley, 8 miles west, southwest of
Lodi and 11 miles east of the San Joaquin River, which represents the axis of the San Joaquin
Valley. This valley is the southern extension of the Great Valley of California, a broad
structural trough that has been the depocenter of 4,000 plus meters of sediment since the Late
Jurassic. During the Late Tertiary and Quaternary the source of sediments along the eastern
Lima Ranch 1 of 17
Site Characterization Work Plan Addendum
April 2008
