These data will be used to assist in the
collection of groundwater grab samples and in interpreting the effects of local soil conditions
on the movement of groundwater impacts from the operations on the Site.
2.2 Task 2—Reconnaissance Borings
A series of exploratory borings will be advanced on the Lima Ranch property to confirm and
quantify the impacts to groundwater that have resulted from current and historical dairy and
agricultural operations. The locations of the proposed borings are shown on Figure 4. The
locations of the proposed borings may be adjusted, based on field conditions.
The proposed exploratory boring locations include:
1. One soil lithology boring and eight groundwater reconnaissance borings will be
advanced in main operations area, which includes corals, barns, housing, and
feed lot areas, and around the waste treatment pond. Groundwater samples from
these borings will provide information on the groundwater impacts resulting
from the high concentration of animals in the area and data on the permeability
of the soils around the waste treatment pond and the impact of the pond on the
groundwater immediately adjacent to the pond.
2. Three reconnaissance groundwater borings will be advanced in the operations
area on the east side of the Site. Samples from these borings will provide
information about the groundwater impacts resulting from Lima Ranch
operations.
3. Six reconnaissance groundwater borings will be advanced across the Site at the
locations shown on Figure 4. Samples from these boring will provide
information on the groundwater impacts resulting from waste dispersal
operations.
Direct push drilling technology will be used to advance borings for collecting grab
groundwater samples, as discussed in Section 3. One reconnaissance groundwater sample
will be collected from all borings. The specific depth interval for the groundwater samples
will be determined based on the results of the Lithology Boring. The reconnaissance
groundwater sample will be collected from the approximate center of the uppermost water-
bearing interval.
Lima Ranch 3 of 17
Site Characterization Work Plan Addendum
April 2008
