8700 Thornton Road Page 3
Work Plan—Soil Boring Installation
' GPE Project No.639.2
May 18,2011
' 2.2 Sampling and Analyses
P g Y
While drilling, each boring will be continuously sampled. Soil samples will be screened
' using field methods by observing discoloration and odor. If no field evidence of vadose
zone contamination is found, soil samples are unlikely to be submitted for laboratory
' analysis except for the bottom samples.
Soil samples are collected using a 4-foot long by 1.25 inch inside diameter drive sampler
lined with a plastic sample sleeve. Upon retrieval, soil samples at 4-foot intervals will be
logged and sample material retained for possible laboratory analysis will be sealed with
plastic endcaps fitted over the sample sleeve, and a representative section of each 4-foot
' sample section will be labeled and placed in an ice chest chilled to 4 degrees C.
Each sample container will then be labeled and placed into an ice chest chilled to 4°C to
await transport to the laboratory under chain of custody protocol.
All sampling equipment will be thoroughly cleaned before and between uses. No soil
cuttings will be generated during the Geo-Probe drilling process. Samples selected for
laboratory analysis will be submitted to a Argon Analytical, a State Certified analytical
laboratory and tested as follows:
' • Total Extractable Petroleum Hydrocarbons TEPH-D b EPA method 8015 m
Y ( ) Y ( )
• Total gasoline range Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH-G) by EPA method 8015(m), and
• BTEX Volatile Organic Compounds using EPA method 8021.
The following table summarizes the detection limits of various constituents:
Compound TPH TEPH BTEX MTBE
Detection Limit 1 5 0.5 0.05
Units Mg/Kg Mg/Kg Mg/Kg Mg/Kg
If no petroleum contamination is detected by field methods (staining, odor, PID), only the
bottom sample will be tested. If contamination is detected, it is likely that additional
' samples will be tested. If no TPH or BTEX compounds are detected, the method used to
test for gasoline oxygenates will be EPA 8021. If any TPH or BTEX contamination is
detected, oxygenates will be tested using EPA 8260.
1
2937 Veneman Ave.,#13240 Geo-Phase Environmental Inc.
