INFORMATION SHEET
ESCALON PACKERS, INC.
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
Escalon Packers, Inc., owns a tomato processing and canning facility on McHenry Avenue,
south of the City of Escalon. The facility seasonally operates from June through October.
This permit allows discharge during emergency conditions (mechanical failure of the cooling
towers). The wastewater that will be produced by Escalon Packers' operations consists of
noncontact cooling water and evaporator water. Evaporator water is generated from condenser
units that cool vapors drawn off from the tomato pulp cookers. Following the condensers, the
evaporator water passes through a cooling tower for temperature reduction. The evaporator
water and noncontact cooling water then combine and pass through two fine mesh screens to
remove any residual tomato particles that might be present. The water will be chlorinated before
discharge to the irrigation canal which is tributary to the Stanislaus River.
The Discharger expects that discharge will occur on an infrequent basis, estimated at once every
few years. Discharge will be 2.3 mgd to the Stanislaus River via the San Joaquin County Main
District Canal. Process wastewater is discharged to the City of Escalon's wastewater treatment
plant.
KMG:ldj/June 28, 1995
