2. PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
Two types of performance criteria to establish SVE termination are described. These
performance criteria are discussed in detail in Section 4. The primary performance
criterion (1) is based on operating the SVE system until asymptotic stabilization of VOC
concentrations has been achieved and a rebound assessment period of 12-months has
been completed. The secondary performance criterion (2) is based on achieving specified
residual VOC concentrations in soil gas. The soil gas cleanup goals are based on the Los
Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board guidance document cited in the references.
Preliminary goals have been developed by DTSC staff and are based on a combination
of actual site data and mean values for various soil parameters. Actual field parameters
will be developed during site characterization activities performed prior to or in conjunction
with the pilot test programs. Soil gas cleanup goals will then be recalculated using site
specific parameters for soil moisture content, bulk density, and organic content. The
preliminary soil gas cleanup goals are discussed in Section 4.
The objective of the performance criteria is to allow termination of the operation of SVE
systems upon meeting either set of criteria. It is important to recognize that these general
criteria may be applicable at some sites in the Lodi area but only the first set of criteria
may be applicable at others.
These criteria are anticipated to be applied at each of the responsible party sites in the
Lodi area. Each responsible party site has different subsurface geologic and
hydrogeologic conditions and variations in specific types and concentrations of VOCs
contained in the subsurface. However, overall similarities of the sites allow these
performance criteria to be applied to each of the individual sites.
2
