The plan proposes the
abandonment of a background well,MW-3 and the construction of a replacement well, MW-3r at a like
hydrogeologic location. The reason for abandoning MW-3 is the sale and future development of the lot
where the well is located.
The proposed location for MW-3r is upgradient of the former lime ponds, in a like hydrogeologic
location to MW-3. The work plan proposes to drill a boring to 100 feet, collect groundwater samples
every five feet and install the well screen based on sample results. A ten-foot well screen is planned.
This method for locating impacted groundwater is appropriate in a downgradient monitoring well, it is
not desirable for a background well. In order to monitor background groundwater chemistry the well
should be screened at first water. Given the historical range of water levels reported in the work plan,
the well may need at least a 20-foot screen length.
A brief letter amending the work plan to address the issues noted above will be sufficient for approval to
proceed with this work.
If you have any questions please call me at(916)255-3116.
ROSS D.
