File No. 20-3978-02.1301 KLEINFELDER
October 30, 1996
Task 2.1 Statistical Analysis of Groundwater Data &
Request for Regulatory Closure
Kleinfelder will conduct an analysis of the historical groundwater monitoring data with the
objective of assessing whether the data show evidence of groundwater impacts. Our analysis will
consist of three phases. In the first phase, we will review the existing data and compile it into a
database for later statistical analysis. In the second phase we will look at background monitoring
data to see if there is evidence of spatial variation of naturally occurring constituents such as TDS,
barium and sulfate. It has been our experience on other sites that naturally occurring spatial
variation is commonly found. This is important since it means that the traditional means of
comparison (comparing upgradient data to downgradient data) would not be appropriate in an
environment where naturally occurring spatial variation is present. We will perform this analysis
using data from the upgradient and crossgradient monitoring wells that are likely outside of the
zone of influence of constituents that may have been released from the impoundments. This data
will undergo a statistical analysis using the ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) method. Based on the
result of the second phase, we will select the appropriate method of analysis (statistical test, trend
graphing, etc.) and assess whether there is evidence of the ponds affecting groundwater quality.
ASSUMPTION AND CLIENT RESPONSIBILITIES
The proposed scope of services and estimated budget are based on the following:
• The cover letter (attached) is an integral part of this revised proposal.
• Two client/regulatory agency meetings are included in our cost estimate. Additional meetings
may be held at an additional fee.
• The proposed scope of work and cost estimate is based on the previously described scope of
work. If additional services are deemed necessary, the client will be notified immediately.
The work (Tasks 1.1 and 2.1) may be completed in approximately 4 weeks from the date of
authorization. The above-noted schedule is approximate and is based on factors beyond the
control of Kleinfelder.
20-3978-02.EOIIMR960I24 Page 4 of 7 (9/996, Kleinfelder, Inc.
