order to confirm that location. During these transects , soil samples will be
collected using the probing equipment. After the sump has been located by the
probe transects , one groundwater observation well will be installed. The well
[ location will be selected in consultation with Chevron hnd the RWQCB. We antic-
ipate that the observation well will be on the down-gradient edge of the sump.
This well will indicate whether free oil is present on the water table and will
also allow groundwater sampling for chemical analysis, if desired. More details
on the borings and well location are provided below.
Probe Transects
< The former sump is believed to have been situated along what is now the
eastern edge of Alden Park. The initial transect used to locate the sump is
shown on Plate 2. This transect will indicate the width of the sump.
Additional transects will be performed where access permits to further define
the location of the former sump.
The transects will be performed using procedures implemented to locate the
concrete perimeter. For these transects , however, the solid probe tool will be
replaced by a hollow 1-inch diameter casing which allows retrieval of soil
samples. These samples are extruded in the field into appropriate containers
for either physical examination or chemical testing.
Continuous samples will be collected from the surface to a depth of approxi-
mately 15 feet below ground surface. Probes will be advanced until soil that is
{ not visually contaminated by hydrocarbons is encountered.
Once the sump has been identified, selected soil samples from beneath the
sump, but at or above the water table, will be submitted to a laboratory for
analysis of oil and grease.
The following procedure will be followed for soil samples collected from
beneath the sump. The sampler will be fitted with clean, 6-inch long, 1-inch
r diameter brass sample tubes. After retrieval from the probe hole , the soil will
be extruded by the HanDriven crew into a container provided by Anatec
} Laboratories, Inc. of Santa Rosa, California. The container will be sealed and
t
labeled. The labels will contain the following information: (1) boring number;
f1
JED2/H -5-
