PLANTING TREES IN ALDEN PARK
Purpose
The purpose of this task is to make the park more attractive and
replace trees that have died. We will plant six new trees in Alden
Park, chosen by a landscaper from the following list:
o Liquid Amber*
o Ghinko (male variety) *
o Russian olive
o Baily Acacia
o Melia Azadirac
o Saucer Magnolia
These trees were carefully chosen with the help of plant
specialists from UC Berkeley and Chevron. They were chosen to be
compatible with the climate and soil conditions in the Tracy area
and to add the most value to the park.
The precise locations for the trees will be chosen by a landscaper
working closely with the City of Tracy. However, the trees will
not be located in the northeast, southwest or perimeter of the park
as shown on Plate 8 . Some of these areas may be needed for
installation of a site cleanup system or seep collection vaults
(see next section) . Also, much of the area on the northeast side
of the park should be preserved for public activities that require
the large, open spaces.
Planting Design
The trees will be planted with a "flower pot" design to ensure
their successful growth over the buried concrete slab in the park
(see Plate 9) . A small excavation will be made, lined with
concrete and filled with topsoil. In addition, a casing will be
installed from the bottom of the excavation through the concrete
slab to a depth of 15 feet below grade.
The purpose of the pot is to keep the tree roots from reaching oily
dirt in the formation, possibly stressing the roots by limiting
their oxygen. The casing, also filled with topsoil, will ensure
proper drainage and allow unimpeded growth of deeper roots.
The following procedure will be followed to install each of the new
trees:
o General procedures given earlier will be followed.
o Casing. A 24-inch diameter casing will be installed from the
surface to 15 feet below grade and filled with soil . The hole
through the slab will not be sealed around the casing.
* Liquid Amber and Ghinko are on a list of trees preferred by the
City of Tracy, therefore they will be planted if available. If
they are not available we will seek approval from the city for
planting trees from the other four choices.
8
