' 01 March 2004
• AGE-NC Project No 99-0645
' 23 SVE PROCEDURES
As per the AGE submitted Sate Assessment and Soil Vapor Extraction Feasibility Work Plan, dated
' 12 August 2002 and Work Plan Addendum - Site Assessment and Feasibility Analysts, dated 08
September 2002,two soil vapor extraction pilot tests were conducted on 18 September 2003 and 06
October 2003
' On 18 September 2003, the upper sand layer was tested using vapor well VW1B, screened from 15
feet bsg to 40 feet bsg as the extraction well On 06 October 2003,a second pilot test was conducted
' on the fine-grained deeper impacted areas closest to ground water at the site using vapor well
VWIA, screened from 40 feet bsg to 70 feet bsg as the extraction well The pilot tests were
performed to evaluate SVE as a remedial alternative The tests were conducted using a vapor
' extraction system(VES),VACLEEN 1000G,manufactured byEnvironmental Techniques The VES
unit consists of a positive displacement blower, driven by an internal combustion (IC) engine
Propane was used as a supplemental fuel source to start the engine and maintain performance
' Hydrocarbon vapor was destroyed as part of the internal combustion process Emissions from the
engine were routed through two catalytic converters to maximize the destruction rate of the extracted
. hydrocarbon vapors
1
' 2 3 1 SVE Pilot Test
On 18 September 2003, the pilot test was initiated at 8 00 am and continued for approximately
' 8hours An Induced vacuum potential was applied to the casing of vapor well V W 1 B The vacuum-
Induced pressure reduction was monitored at surrounding observation points(VW 1A,V W2,VW3,
MW-1R,MW-2 and MW-3)with air tight well caps pre-connected with Magnehelic vacuum gauges
' fitted to each observation well A sample port was tapped into the PVC near the wellhead and a
portable organic vapor meter equipped with a PID was used to measure organic vapor (OV)
concentrations The extraction flow rate was measured in-line with a flow rotometer, directly before
' the VES The organic vapor concentrations, Induced, vacuum potential at the observation points,
extracted soil vapor flow rate, and revolutions per minute(RPM) of the SVE unit were measured at
0 5 hour intervals and logged on field sheets
' On 06 October 2003,the pilot test was initiated at 8 20am and continued for approximately 8 hours
The induced vacuum potential was applied to the casing of vapor well VW1A and vacuum-Induced
' pressure reduction was monitored at the surrounding observation points(VW 1B,VW2,VW3,MW-
1R,MW-2 and MW-3)with air tight well caps pre-connected with Magnehelic vacuum gauges fitted
to each observation well The same procedure was followed as that on 18 September 2003 Result
' of the pilot for each date are summarized in Table 2 and a copy of the field logs are including In
Appendix C
' Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc
1
