Introduction : A hazardous material is any solid , liquid or gas ; which because of its quantity , concentration , physical , chemical , or infectious characteristics my pose a substantial health hazard to humans to the environment when spilled or released . Hazardous materials can be found in almost any work area . If you look around your work area you can probably spot at least one hazardous material that you come into contact with during the workday . Therefore it is very important that employees know how to protect themselves when working with or exposed to a hazardous material . The goal of this training is to reduce or eliminate on the job accidents and injuries caused by working with hazardous materials . To minimize the dangers in the work place follow these precautions : o Always know the contents of any container you are using and the location of the Material Safety Data Sheets ( MSDS ) o Always read the label and MSDS of any material before you use it . o Always know the correct disposal of any material in your work area . o Always ensure that containers have their contents marked clearly . o Always use the proper personal protective equipment ( PPE ) whenever you are using a hazardous material o Always store hazardous materials in the proper location or storage areas . Flammable materials are stored in flammable storage lockers . Corrosive and acids are stored in Blue chemical storage lockers . Pesticides are stored in Green pesticide storage lockers . o Always know the closest location of an emergency eye wash station or emergency shower station whenever you are working with a hazardous material . o Always know the emergency first aid procedures for any chemical you are using .
