WITH PREFIX (UN1993, Waste Flammable Liquid <br /> N.O.S./Petroleum Distillates) <br /> • Drum is located on a flat hardened surface away from any storm drain inlets. <br /> • Spill Kit is in close proximity and readily available in the event of a spill. <br /> • Drum is located in well ventilated area and free of any ignition sources. <br /> 1.4.1. Manual Aerosol Can Puncturing Device Procedure <br /> • Secure puncturing device to the top of a rust-free 30/55 gallon, closed-top drum to collect the liquids. <br /> • Ensure that safety glasses are being worn prior to puncturing. <br /> • Facility Staff shall use extreme caution while loading aerosol cans into puncturing device. <br /> • Slowly pull down the handle on the puncturing device. <br /> • Allow a few seconds of contact time before releasing the handle to raise the puncturing pin. <br /> • Completely empty can(s) by allowing contents to drain into the containment drum. <br /> • Remove punctured can from puncture unit and allow to air dry prior to disposal/recycling. <br /> • It is recommended that cans that contain solvents, degreaser and lubricants are punctured last to help <br /> with keeping the puncturing unit clean. <br /> 1.5. Clean-Up & Maintenance of Aerosol Can Puncturing Device <br /> Proper operation and maintenance of puncturing equipment is required for its safe use. Maintain a strict clean-up <br /> schedule to keep the aerosol can puncturing device in good working order, including: <br /> • Use a putty knife to clean accumulated materials from the puncturing platform, walls and container <br /> funnel. <br /> • Ensure proper cleaning of the puncturing unit to prevent moving parts from "freezing" in place making <br /> it difficult to remove parts and replace gaskets. See owner's manual for all scheduled maintenance, <br /> repair and adjustments. <br /> 1.6. Managing Punctured, Drained, Empty Aerosol Cans <br /> Empty, steel aerosol can are recyclable and accepted by the steel industry; verify with local recycling program for <br /> specifics. Prior to recycling cans, completely empty and remove plastic lid; spray nozzles need not be removed. <br /> Residue remaining in an aerosol can may be subject to federal and state regulations so complete product <br /> drainage is strongly recommended. <br /> 1.7. Managing 30/55 Gallon Container of Residual Liquid <br /> Once the drum is either full or reaches the allotted accumulation period it must be disposed of using a state <br /> registered Hazardous Waste disposal company (Asbury Environmental Services). <br /> 2. Safety & Health Precautions <br /> 2.1. Training <br /> 2.1.1.Prior to sorting, managing, or preparing HW, staff shall complete Hazardous Categorization, Occupational <br /> Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)trainings. Refresher training shall be conducted annually. <br /> 2.1.2.Staff shall be trained within six months of hire or starting a new position or shall be supervised by trained <br /> and experienced staff. <br /> 2.1.3.Staff responsible for any aspect of hazardous waste management shall be trained relevant to job duties. <br /> 2 <br /> AEROSOL CAN MANAGEMENT <br />
