qTRUCK BY INJURY PREVENTION: <br /> Struck by accidents are those where an object strikes the worker with force. The object <br /> may be falling, swinging, rolling or flying when it strikes the worker. According to a report <br /> by the Bureau of Labor & Statistics (BLS), there were a total of 503 fatal injuries in 2013 <br /> where workers were struck by objects. <br /> These accidents are frequently related to housekeeping, not paying attention to your <br /> surroundings and poor communication. Poorly stacked materials may fall or slide. <br /> Overhead storage shelves, racks, hangers, aisles, passageways, and doors can cause a <br /> struck by hazard. Careless work habits can make these hazards worse. <br /> Protect yourself and others by learning how to identify struck by injury hazards, and by <br /> following safe practices. <br /> Examples of Struck By Hazards <br /> Q Tools, parts and knives left on ledges, shelves, or work surfaces. <br /> JJ Swinging doors. <br /> Faulty or missing guards leading to equipment debris hazards. <br /> Objects leaning against walls, racks, posts, or equipment that are unsecure. <br /> JJ Cluttered and unorganized work areas. <br /> A; Poor lighting. <br /> Safety Practices for Prevention <br /> Q Organize, clean and store safely. Practice good housekeeping and store <br /> everything neatly and safely. Don't. leave objects lying around, return them to <br /> their proper place IMMEDIATELY! <br /> Post safety warnings at high risk areas such as door openings and equipment <br /> zones. <br /> Do not tamper with or remove guards or screens on equipment. If a guard is <br /> missing, report it to management. <br /> JJ Always wear proper PPE such as hard hats, safety glasses, goggles and face <br /> shields to help protect workers from falling objects. <br /> Get a tight grip on anything you carry and ask for assistance when needed. <br /> Pay Attention and Prepare <br /> dU Be aware and pay attention.
