Simpson Paper Mill
-2_ 21 January 1988
c
number one pond. It was flowing into the fields used for disposal.
• No ponded water was visible in the fields.
Construction of a cogeneration plant at the site is oY4'g
' . It is
expected to go on-line in March, 1988. According to cent report
of waste discharge the cogeneration plant should addillion
gallons a day to the ongoing discharge. Data requestrom Simpson
indicates that the TDS of the entire discharge will increase about
25%. Abrahamson said Simpson plans to discharge the cogeneration
wastewater directly to the number 2 pond.
The number 3 pond is currently out of use. It was used to direct
water to the Stanislaus River in the past. The gate valve used to
empty this pond is badly rusted, and it appears it could not be
opened.
The 35 acres of disposal fields receive water as the pumps are
turned on to empty the number 2 pond, which has a volume of about 6
million gallons. Abrahamson said it takes one to two days to empty
the pond to the fields. The fields are disced about every six weeks
in the summer. According to Abrahamson, ponding problems only occur
when the Stanislaus River is flowing at 5, 000 cfs or above. The
last time there was standing water in the fields was during the
heavy rains in February of 1986 . A borrow pit adjacent to the ponds
exposes clean sands, so the soils at this site appear very well
suited to rapid infiltration.
SULU4ARY
Simpson will collect samples of influent and effluent for TDS
analysis to aid in the determination of the ultimate TDS of water in
the discharge once the cogeneration plant is on line.
After observing the soils on the site it is easier to understand how
percolation is able to dispose of the wastewater generated at this
facility which averages 1. 2 million gpd for those days the plant is
in operation.
Engineering Geologist
