Kennedy/Jenks Consultants
needed based on sample recovery). Soil samples were analyzed for TPHd, TPHmo, total
arsenic, and total lead. Additionally, the shallow soil sample from Boring OU4-S4 was analyzed
for VOCs and SVOCs. Groundwater sampling was not proposed in these OUs.
2.1.4 Operable Unit 5
Sample locations were situated within each AOI of OU-5 to assess potential chemical impacts
associated with former railway activities and former buried pipelines. The sampling program is
summarized by AOI below:
• AOI 9 — Shallow Soil: Twenty-eight soil borings were advanced on a 200-foot lateral
grid throughout OU-5 to further assess the presence of arsenic and lead in shallow soil.
Soil samples were collected from at least two depth intervals (generally 0 to 0.5 feet and
2 to 2.5 feet bgs, modified as necessary based on sample recovery), and analyzed for
total arsenic and total lead. Groundwater samples were not collected from these soil
borings.
Three soil borings were advanced in the eastern portion of OU-5 near Central Avenue to
assess the possible presence of petroleum hydrocarbon constituents in soil and
groundwater. Soil samples were collected from these three borings based on
observation of nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL), visual evidence of staining, and
portable photoionization detector (PID) readings. Soil samples were analyzed for TPHg,
TPHd, TPHmo, and BTEX. Reconnaissance groundwater samples were collected from
each of these three borings and analyzed for TPHg, TPHd, TPHmo, and BTEX.
• AOI 10 — Boring B4 Area: Six soil borings were proposed at 50-foot lateral intervals in
the western, southwestern, and northwestern directions from the previous borings
installed in the vicinity of Boring B4 to further delineate the lateral extent of petroleum
hydrocarbons in soil and groundwater. Three additional borings were proposed in areas
where the highest concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons were detected and in
downgradient areas to assess the vertical extent of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil and
groundwater. The locations of these soil borings are shown on Figure 4. Eight more
borings were advanced in the AOI 10 area in January 2006 in response to observations
and findings from the original nine borings.
Soil samples were collected from each boring based on observation of NAPL, visual
evidence of staining, and PID readings. Soil samples were analyzed for TPHg, TPHd,
TPHmo, and BTEX. Additionally, three of the soil samples were submitted for petroleum
hydrocarbon fingerprinting analysis; these samples were selected based on the
presence of NAPL, visual evidence of staining, and PID readings. Reconnaissance
groundwater samples were collected from each boring and analyzed for TPHg, TPHd,
TPHmo, and BTEX.
• AOI 11 —Vicinity of Trenches PTP5 and PTP9: Soil samples were collected from
additional exploratory trenches in this area. Soil samples were analyzed for total arsenic,
total lead, PAHs, and organochlorine pesticides (Trench PTP5 area only). Groundwater
• samples were not collected. The final trench locations were adjusted based on
location-specific conditions and observations during field activities.
DRAFT Phase I Remedial Investigation Report Page 14
Former Tracy Railyard, Tracy, California
g:Gs-groupladminyob10510565777.18_uprr109-reports\d rptltext.doc
