If an <br /> experimental protocol has been written and incorporates all of the relevant safety information required in this form, it <br /> can be used(only with Department and EH&S approvals)in lieu of this template. <br /> Summary(Overview): <br /> The purpose of this procedure is developed to reduce the potential of illness or injury by implementing <br /> practices to identify and effectively manage the handling of hazardous waste. Consult with the Risk <br /> Management Department for additional guidance on how to handle/manage hazardous waste. <br /> 1. Hazard Identification <br /> a. Pre aration and Use: <br /> To properly store hazardous materials,make sure to use appropriate hazardous waste containers.Use sealable <br /> containers that prevent the release of harmful chemical substances. Make sure that containers are compatible <br /> with the waste being stored and are manufactured with weather and corrosion resistant materials. Ensure that <br /> all employees are thoroughly familiar with proper waste handling and emergency procedures,relevant to <br /> their responsibilities during normal facility operations and emergencies. <br /> Note:If identified as a process,provide additional detailed procedural steps for the use of each hazardous chemical in Section 5,below. <br /> b. Chemical Hazards and Risk: <br /> Chemical waste can be corrosive,toxic,flammable, chronic to health, O <e> <br /> harmful to the environment, and explosive,which can result in <br /> injury, fire, or explosion. Equipment Hazards and Risk: <br /> Due to the risk of container leakage, always place the containers in secondary containment and inspect the <br /> waste containers weekly to ensure they are in good condition. <br /> 2. Hazard Control <br /> a. Chemical Selection and Purchasing: <br /> Chemical usage and purchasing shall be planned such that: <br /> • The safest chemical to accomplish the job shall be chosen <br /> • Open bottles and those closest to expiration shall be chosen over opening new bottles <br /> • The surplus inventory will be checked before making any purchases <br /> • Purchases shall be limited to the amount needed that can be used within one year. <br />
