' Health and Safety Plan Operating
' Field operating Rrocedure - FldOl - MM FT—O-n CPION
' Noise is defined as unwanted soured. Noise can cause sudden traumatic hearing loss,
long term more slowly o=irring sensory-neural hearing loss which is irreversible,
disruption of c amuni.cation and masking of warning devices and alarms, increased
' stress levels and effects on the cardio-vascular and nervous systems. These latter
two effects may occur at levels below that which cause damage to hearing and in
situations where the conditions are more or less constant and daily.
' OaM regulations generally apply to 8 hxt e3gxxmres arra consider 85 dBA as an action
level for a Hearing CbnseYvation Program.
' Ffiere feasible, noise exposure will be ca ntrolled by engineering controls. Where
high noise levels are encountered and where engineering controls are infeasible or
until engineering controls can be aooanpl fished, hearing protection devices will be
' used for worker protection from noise induced hearing loss.
Some of the sources of noise can hazardous materials, cion and industrial
sites of a magnitude to cause hearing damage are: ompres_sor motors, drill rig
engine, haunee r blows (frau split spoon or other), corpressor motors, cXXIrprassed air,
oanpressed water, and heavy equipment. The list is not all inclusive.
Any sound level surveys indicating noise levels of 85 dBA or above, or, in the
absence of sound level measuring instramentatian, any noise/sound preventing normal
vocal discission between two individuals at arms length distance will dictate the
need for hearing protection.
Hearing protection will be afforded by either disposable ear plugs or ear muffs.
' Administrative time control is not an acceptable method for preventing noise exposure
since extreme noise for a short duration can cause severe, permanent hearing loss.
' In addition to these protocols, WEST I s Hearing Conservation Program includes
physical exaM nation and audiometric testing during wwaal medical mxdtoring.
Zhe selection, use, maintenance and control of hearing protection is further defined
in the WESICN Personnel Protective Equipment Program.
1
