LLNL-AM-428479
D2. WAA DESCRIPTION
D2.1 General Information
The B-883 WAA is located on the north side of Building 883 (B-883) in the General
Service Area of the LLNL Site 300 (see Figure D-1). Hazardous and mixed waste
generated throughout Site 300 may be stored at the WAA for up to 90 days until
transferred to a permitted Treatment Storage or Disposal Facility (TSDF). Radioactive
waste may also be stored at the WAA until transferred to an approved radioactive waste
disposal facility.
D2.2 Physical Description
The B-883 WAA consists of the north side of B-883 and a bordering area on the east
side of B-883. Waste generated throughout Site 300 is stored at the WAA.
The B-883 WAA is a covered area, approximately 40 x 54-ft., surrounded by a locked
chain link fence and a bordering 65 x 40-ft. uncovered area on the east side. The WAA
is constructed with an epoxy coated concrete floor, a berm in the covered area and
asphalt in the uncovered area. In addition, a grated secondary containment vault is
located in the southwest corner of the covered portion of the WAA. Access to the inside
of the covered portion of the WAA is through a locked gate located on the north side of
the WAA.
D2.3 Description of Waste Handled
Table D-1 lists the waste types typically stored in the B-883 WAA. This list is intended
to alert personnel to the potential hazards in the WAA, but each situation should be
evaluated based on the actual materials involved. Waste stored in the WAA may be
contained in bags, paint cans, buckets, drums, boxes, roll-offs, or other containers
ranging from less than one gallon to 1,000-gallon portable tanks. Liquid hazardous
waste is not stored in the uncovered portion of the WAA.
S300 WAA Contingency Plan D4 September2018
