STATE OF CAL:ORN,A GEORGE DEUKMEJIAN.Governor
CALIFORNIA REGIONAL WA QUALITY CONTROL BOARD—
CENTRAL VALLEY REGION
 .
3443 ROUTIER ROAD
SACRAMENTO,CA 95827-3098
6 May 1988
Mr. L. A. Moldenhauer
Moldenhauer Engineering Company
1107 Kennedy Place, Suite 7
Davis, CA, 95616
SOUTHWEST HIDE MONITORING WELL DRILLING, SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY (CASE #2664)
I.-'e have reviewed your latest monitoring well proposal dated 3 May 1988. As we
discussed at our 29 April 1988 meeting, the plotted water level data collected to
date do not indicate any consistent, overall ground water flow direction. Accord-
ingly, I suggested installation of shallow piezometers to obtain adequate water
level data in addition to -limited water quality information. I also stated,
however, that installation of the proposed monitoring wells (two shallow, one
deep) would be acceptable as long as the shallow wells had sufficient lateral
spacing. Based on the existing data, it was decided that the best apparent
locations were near the horse barn and near the hide processing facility.
Your 3 May letter proposes installing a three well cluster at a new location
northeast of the ponds near the property boundary. An additional well (s) will be
installed at another unspecified on-site location. Presumably, selection of this
well cluster location is based on a re-evaluation of the existing water level data
since the enclosed location map shows direction lines. No explanation or map
labels are included, however.
Assuming the above is accurate, we approve your 3 May proposal , although, we
believe it would be prudent to better establish ground water flow directions
before installing deeper monitoring wells. It is important to reiterate that the
primary objectives of the ongoing work with regards to ground water is to define
the extent of ground water contamination and establish an effective monitoring
system for the ponds. Southwest Hide must ultimately install an adequate number
of monitoring wells in appropriate locations to accomplish these objectives.
If you have any questions, please call me at (916) 361-5742.
14
GARY A.
