Preliminary Endangerment Assessment Page 4
Former Haley's Flying Service
GPE Project 474.2
2.0 APPARENT PROBLEM
The original PEA identified a limited area near the east end of the parcel where the shallow
soil has been severely impacted with several agricultural chemicals. The primary
contaminants are the DDT group, Dieldrin, and Toxaphene, although low concentrations of
other chemicals are present as well. The area of most concern is the exposed soil
surrounding and beneath the pesticide loading dock, and pad and the washout pit. The dates
of the releases are unknown, but it is likely there were a series of small spills or leaks
extending for many years from the 1950's and ending when flight operations ended in the
late 1980's.
Groundwater samples collected from two soil borings contained various pesticides, but these
results were considered unreliable due to suspected cross-contamination. The groundwater
sample results obtained for this addendum are considered to be much more reliable. Organo-
chlorine pesticides, primarily Toxaphene, were detected in the groundwater in the vicinity of
the severely impacted shallow soil. The groundwater contamination is believed to be a result
of leaching of soil contaminants, possibly from the washout pit and loading dock.
2937 Veneman Avenue,Suite B240 Geo-Phase Environmental Inc.
