The concentration limit is representative of background and is calculated using an
average. Where all sampling results are below the analytical method reporting limit, an average value
cannot be calculated and establishing a concentration limit for the development of the statistical limit
is not applicable. The reporting limit becomes the concentration limit and the statistical limit.
4Radioactivity measurements are corrected for the background radioactivity inside the measurement
chamber. A negative value for radioactivity indicates that the average of the sample(s) measured
lower than the instrument background by the amount shown and the actual value is very close to
zero.
5The concentration limit may be set for an individual constituent at a level higher than natural
background for the well if monitoring has determined that groundwater is impacted by the individual
constituent. This allows the Discharger to evaluate whether concentrations are trending upward or a
new release has occurred. Site wide background for tritium is approximately 100 pCi/L. Groundwater
both up and downgradient of Pit 1 has been impacted with tritium above background concentrations.
