Personnel shall also wear hard hats and fluorescent <br /> safety vests. Also, carry an air horn whenever working in proximity to heavy equipment where the <br /> operator's full view of the work area is impeded. <br /> 3_2 Electrical/Utility Hazards <br /> Type(s)/Source: <br /> • Underground utilities <br /> • Overhead utilities <br /> Qualified Exposure Risk: Moderate <br /> Primary"Control": Isolation (Obtain utility clearance for all boring locations and be <br /> aware of overhead powerlines that may be in the way.) <br /> 3.2.1 Underground Utilities <br /> Hazard: Contact with electrical current can cause shock, electrical burns, and/or be instantly fatal. If <br /> heavy equipment (e.g., backhoe, drill rig) makes contact with electrical wires, it may or may not be <br /> insulated from the ground by the tires of the carrier. Under either circumstance, the human body, if it <br /> simultaneously comes in contact with the drill rig and the ground, will provide a conductor of the <br /> electricity to the ground. <br /> Control (s): Demarcate all drilling/digging locations, first. Contact Underground Service Alert (USA) <br /> (1-800-227-2600) and review as-built plans before performing any excavation/drilling/coring activity. <br /> It is advised that a private utility locator be contacted to supplement USAs demarcations, especially <br /> when the project is on private property. Soil intrusive work shall not proceed until all locating <br /> activities have been completed and fully documented in the site records. The initial site safety <br /> orientation meeting for all personnel on-site shall include a review of the underground utility locations <br /> and the location of the site map, showing the position of any underground utility lines. The site safety <br /> orientation shall include a site walkover of each marked utility or line. <br /> A pilot boring equal in diameter to the drilling equipment will be advanced to a minimum of 5 feet <br /> below ground surface using a posthole digger and/or hand auger prior to start of drilling operations for <br /> each boring advanced with a drill rig. The purpose of the pilot boring is to observe the potential <br /> presence of underground utilities not previously identified. <br /> Should personnel encounter a sub-surface condition that creates suspicion that there may be an <br /> unidentified underground line or utility, such individual shall immediately cease work, secure his/her <br /> equipment and notify the Project Manager and SSO. <br /> Project No.S8475-06-70 -8- April 25,2003 <br />
