4.0 GENERAL HEALTH AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
4_1 Personal Hygiene
• Eating, drinking, chewing gum or tobacco, smoking, or any practice that increases the probability
of hand-in-mouth transfer and ingestion of material is prohibited in any area designated as being
potentially impacted.
• Hands and face must be thoroughly washed upon leaving the work area, and before eating,
drinking, or other non-project activities.
• Kneeling, sitting, leaning, or general contact with potentially impacted surfaces, or with surfaces
suspected of being potentially impacted by hazardous materials (i.e., puddles, mud, leachate, etc.)
should be avoided.
• Medicine and alcohol can potentiate the effects of exposure to toxic chemicals. Personnel should
take neither if the likelihood of such potentiation exists. Being under the influence of alcohol
during the field activities is prohibited.
4_2 Buddy System
All field personnel while supporting the field activities are to work with another person at all times.
The subcontractor's representative can serve as the second person while the work is being conducted in
the field. Under no circumstances, other than completion of paper work at the end of the day, are field
personnel to work alone at the site while conducting field activities.
4_3 Work Zone Controls
A restricted access work zone (or Exclusion Zone) encompassing a radius of 15 feet from
borings/excavations will be maintained around the applicable work areas. The purpose of the Work
Zone is to provide points of ingress and egress for personnel and equipment from/to
hazardous/potentially hazardous areas. If the project site is secure, this Work Zone requirement may be
waived at the discretion of the Project Manager. Protective clothing and equipment, as described
below, are to be worn by all personnel working within the Work Zone. The Work Zone is to be
demarcated with caution/hazard tape and barricades (or similar restricting material) and should be
clearly labeled as such. During site operations, the boundary may be modified and adjusted as more
information becomes available.
Project No.S8475-06-70 -15- April 25,2003
