PRELIMINARY SITE INVESTIGATION REPORT
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 General Objectives
This Preliminary Site Investigation Report for the portion of the SR 132 Expressway widening project
at 2500 East SR-132 in the Vernalis area of San Joaquin County, California (the Site) was prepared by
Geocon Consultants, Inc. under the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Contract No.
43A0078 and Task Order(TO)No. 10-OA5100-BG.
The purpose of the scope of work outlined in TO No. 10-OA5100-BG was to determine if buried
underground storage tanks (USTs), piping, or other structures exist at the Site and if the site soils have
been impacted by petroleum hydrocarbons. The investigative results are intended to provide Caltrans
with information prior to construction and to inform the construction contractor of the possible location
of underground facilities and the presence of impacted soil (if encountered)within the project boundaries
for health&safety and disposal purposes.
1.2 Project Location and Description
The project site consists of a former fueling facility located within the proposed right-of-way for the
widening of eastbound SR-132 in Vernalis, California. The approximate project location is depicted
on the Vicinity Map, Figure 1. The Site contains an abandoned service station building, concrete pad
supporting a fuel pump and island, a metal aboveground storage tank (AST), and the associated filler
and dispenser pipes. Diesel fuel is reported by the owner to have been the only bulk fuel dispensed at
the station, and the existing dispenser and AST were placarded for diesel. A buried septic tank is also
reported by the owner to be present on the Site. The site features and area of investigation are depicted
on the Site Plan, Figure 2.
Project No S8475-06-70 -1- July 9,2003
