The Plan proposes to investigate soils at
MonierLifetile's Lathrop and French Camp plants for TPH-diesel and/or Chromium contamination.
Tile Waste piles at these locations are currently undergoing removal and the waste recycled in
compliance with Cleanup and Abatement Order(CAO)No. 5-01-722. The investigation is necessary
to comply with the requirement in Task 4 of the CAO,to - clean close the the waste piles...removing
all waste and any soil containing waste constituents. The investigation is designed to determine how
much if any soil contains waste constituents and must be removed.
At each site, the Plan proposes to advance three direct push borings to 10 feet within the footprint of
the former waste piles. The soils will be inspected and described; and samples will be collected for
analysis for total and extractable TPHd, Cr, and Cr6 at depths of 1, 2,5, 5 and 10 feet. The French
Camp investigation will be carried out in January 2006 and the Lathrop investigation in June 2006.
Depths to groundwater at the Lathrop and French Camp facilities are approximately 25 and 35 feet
respectively. At both facilities, TPHd has been detected in groundwater and staff is concerned that
limiting the borings to 10 feet may not fully define the.extent of contaminated soil. The Plan should be
revised to continue all borings to groundwater, collecting samples below 10 feet at intervals of 5 feet
(at 15, 20,...35 feet).
Other than extending the borings to groundwater the Plan complies with CAO No. 5-01-722 and
MonierLifetile may implement the plan at their convenience.
If you have any questions please call me at(916) 464-4614.
Ross D.
