J. H. KLEINFE[DER & ASSOCIATES
File No. S-2314-1
_ August 15 , 1978
I PAGE SIX
The above is a general summary of the soil conditions
found in the 14 exploratory borings drilled for this
investigation. More detailed descriptions of the soils
encountered in each boring are noted on the Logs of Borings ,
Plates III through XII . All soils have been classified
according to the Unified Soil Classification System, which
is described on Plate II.
LABORATORY TESTING
Laboratory tests were performed on selected samples
obtained from the test borings in order to evaluate the
strength, density, grain-size and expansion characteristics
of these soils . The tests performed included Moisture
Content and Dry Density Determinations , Unconfined Compressive
J
Strength Tests and Grading Analyses . In addition, two
Resistance-Value (R-Value) Tests were performed on samples
i
of the surface soils for use in pavement design calculations.
Results of the Moisture Content and Dry Density
Determinations are noted on the Logs of Borings at the
corresponding sample locations . The results of the
Unconfined Compressive Strength Tests and Grading Analyses
are summarized on Plate XIX. The results of the
R-Value Tests are presented on Graphs I and II.
' CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
General Comments
Based on the results of our field explorations and
laboratory tests , we conclude that the site of the proposed
Mar-way Estates lies in a transition zone between the Stockton '
s'
"adobe" clay and the less expansive soil to the east. The
surface dark-brown to black silty clay soil contains ap -
preciable amounts of fine sand and is considered moderately
