. H. KLEINFELDEK & ASSOCIATES File No. 5-2314-1
August 15, 1978
PAGE NINE
The actual depth required will be evaluated in the field by
a representative of J. H. Kleinfelder & Associates .
We recommend that all stripping and debris be removed '
i
from areas of construction and not incorporated in any
structural fill. After the site has been cleared,
we recommend that the native soils within a minimum of
5 feet beyond all building areas be scarified to a
maximum depth of 6 inches and reccmpacted. In building .
i area, the recommended degree of recompaction of the
i
surface clay soils is between 85 and 90 percent of
the maximum dry density as determined by the ASTM D-1557-70
Itest procedure. In portions of the home with raised
n
floors, the moisture content of the surface soils will
1 not be critical . However, it is recommended that the
i
recompaction of the surface soils in those areas to
receive slab-on-grade floors be performed at a moisture
content of at least 5 percent in excess of the optimum
soil moisture.
If fill is required to bring the building pads to finish
grade, it is our opinion that on-site soils or imported
material can be used. It is suggested, however, that an imported
granular non-expansive soil be used beneath slab-on-grade floors
in order to further reduce the risk of post-construction damage
due to heaving or shrinkage of the native clay soils . As a
guide , we recommend that import fill have a maximum percentage
passing the #200 Sieve of 40 and a maximum plasticity index
Of 8 . We suggest that samples of the proposed fill soils be
submitted to our laboratory for approval prior to being brought
to the site.
Engineered Fill or structural backfill should be placed in
thin, horizontal layers a maximum of 8 inches in loose thickness .
The recommended minimum degree of compaction for imported granular
Z
I
