i
Making and Breaking Joints
The following procedures will be followed when making and breaking joints:
• Tongs should be used for the initial making up and breaking of the joint. The
rotary table should not be used for the initial breaking of a joint.
• Employees making or breaking joints should not be permitted to stand within the
arc of the tong handles when the tong pull line is in tension. Employees should
handle the tongs only by the appropriate handles.
• Employees should be trained in the safe use of spinning chains. Spinning chains
should not be handled near the rotary table while it is in motion.
4.2
.5 Hearing Conservation Program
All on-site IT and subcontractor personnel shall wear hearing protection, with a Noise
Reduction Rating (NRR) of at least 25, when noise levels exceed 85 dBA (or wherever voices
' must be raised in order to be understood at arms length). All site personnel who may be
exposed to noise shall also receive baseline and annual audiograms and training as to the
causes and prevention of hearing loss, in accordance with rr Procedure HS402.
Whenever possible, equipment that does not generate excessive noise levels will be selected
for this project. If the use of noisy equipment is unavoidable, wherever possible, barriers or
increased distance will be used to minimise worker exposure to noise.
4.2.6 Heat Stress/Cold Stress Prevention
4.2.6.1 Heat Stress
It is not anticipated that heat stress will be a problem due to the moderate climate of the site
during late fall. Should weather conditions change and become unseasonably warm, measures
will be taken in preventing heat stress, including:
• Site workers will be encouraged to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
.y
They will be advised to slightly increase their salt intake by lightly salting their
food.
• On-site drinking water will be kept cool to encourage personnel to drink
frequently.
• All personnel will be advised of the dangers and symptoms of heat stroke, heat
exhaustion and heat cramps.
• All employees shall be informed of the importance of adequate rest, acclimation
and proper diet in the prevention of heat stress disorders.
Mzf°5-09-94/U T/9a-oo6a 4-7
