3.1.4 STANDARDS FOR AUGER DRILLING <br /> Auger drilling is hole advancement by rotating an auger while pressing it into the soil. Three <br /> types of augers are commonly used at hazardous waste sites: a solid stem auger, a hollow <br /> stem auger, and a bucket auger. The solid stem auger is a helix flange welded onto a solid <br /> pipe. The hollow stem auger is a helix flange welded onto a hollow pipe. The bucket auger <br /> is a cylinder with a bottom that has a toothed opening to slice into the soil. <br /> Solid stem and bucket augers have a limited use at hazardous waste sites because there is <br /> no way to prevent the spread of contamination during augering and no way to collect <br /> undisturbed samples. <br /> Standard 21.4.1 Solid stem and bucket augers shall not be used to drill through <br /> contaminated materials or to drill into saturated materials. <br /> 3.2 CORING STANDARDS <br /> Cores are time-consuming to drill, sensitive to moisture changes and pressure changes at the <br /> surface, and bulky. However, cores are the best tools to determine exactly what the <br /> subsurface geology is at the drill hole. Because of the expense of drilling cores and the value <br /> of the information derived from the cores, it is important to handle and store the cores in a <br /> manner that preserves the cores throughout the duration of the project. <br /> Standard 2.2..1.1 All coring bits, core liners, and core catchers shall be <br /> decontaminated prior to taking each core. <br /> -�' Standard 2212 All cores shall be drilled using clean, shatter-proof liners. Portions <br /> of cores removed for sampling shall be indicated by notation on a water-proof card to <br /> be kept with each core box. Core drilling requires fluid circulation to cool the bit and <br /> remove cuttings.
