NAVCOM 5 30 August 1990
4) _ Assessment of the influence of the storm drain system upon Burns Cutoff and
the ground water.
Effluent samples from the pumping station will be taken monthly for six
months and analyzed for VOCs. In addition, flow records of the pump
station, and water level measurements in the storm drain channels and nearby
- shallow monitoring wells will be correlated to determine if the storm drain
system is dewatering the water table aquifer. Five surface water gauging
stations will be installed, two in Burns Cutoff, one in an onsite duck pond,
and two within the lower reaches of the drainage system.
Three additional piezometer clusters, each containing three piezometers,
will be installed in Area 1 . These clusters will be used to determine the
relationships between ground water flow and the interior drainage ditch,
including vertical gradients and the dewatering depths of the drainage
system, and effects of tidal fluctuations.
5) Investigation of the interconnection of the upper and intermediate water
bearing zones.
Two 6-inch diameter wells will be installed in the vicinity of the
piezometer clusters one in the shallow zone and the other in the
intermediate zone. Pump tests will be conducted on these wells to determine
the hydraulic characteristics of each zone and the intervening aquitard.
Slug tests will be conducted in 15 wells and piezometers.
6) Improve the soil stratigraphy database
All borings will be continuously logged. Select samples will also be taken
for chemical (VOC) and physical (sieve analysis) testing.
I have the following comments on this workplan.
1) Since the sampling of the ground water is very limited and dated (only
sampled once in late 1986/87) , the MARK Group correctly concludes that this
data is insufficient to gauge the quality of the ground water (page 2-4) .
Yet, they recommend that further sampling be limited to VOCs only.
Additional chemical analyses appears appropriate based upon these
K1einfe1der findings:r zyv,.6k OLf 04 Q klloL)
a) Landfill area wells having arsenic and selenium levels in excess of
MCLS, and specific conductance levels of around 3000 micromhos/cm,
and chloride and sulfate levels as high as 8000 to 1500 mg/1
r spe ively-
b) ell -lr in he Fire Fighting g g area having arsenic and chloride
levels of 300 ppb and 2170 mg/l respectively.
