Pep Boys#562
Introduction
In the servicing of vehicles, Pep Boys collects used (waste) oil and used (waste) coolant. Used oil
and used coolant are hazardous substances under California law. Used oil is temporarily stored in
the Waste Oil Tank, and used coolant is temporarily stored in the Waste Coolant Tank. Oily waste
water from washing and rinsing parts is stored in the Waste Water Tank. The hazardous waste
tank system that is the subject of this certification report comprises these three tanks.
Pep Boys employees drive customers'vehicles into one of the service bays and where they are
raised on lifts. Waste oil and waste coolant are drained from the vehicles into wheeled collection
units called caddies. When full, waste oil caddies are brought to the Waste Oil Tank. A double
diaphragm pump is used to transfer the contents of these caddies into the tank. Waste coolant is
handled in a very similar way.The only difference is that the waste coolant caddies have on-
board pumps that are used to transfer the coolant. Oily waste water is collected in small
containers and hand carried to the Waste Water Tank. When the tanks are full, their contents are
pumped into tanks on licensed waste transporters'trucks by the trucks' on-board pumps.
Temporary hoses are used for all fluid transfers.
Figures 1 and 2 are a site location map and an aerial photograph of the site, and Figure 3 shows
tank locations. Figures 4-7 are schematic and manufacturer's drawings of system tanks.Tables I
through V list information required by Section 665265.192 and 66265.193 of the California Code
of Regulations (CCR).Additional information is provided in this introduction and the Assessment
section which follows.
Photos of the system are included in Appendix A, and seismic, hydraulic, concrete and soil
calculations are in Appendix B. Appendix C contains equipment specifications, and Appendices D
and E list qualifications of the engineer and inspector.
On the following pages is an assessment of the hazardous waste tank system. This assessment
was conducted in accordance with the requirements of CCR Sections 66265.192 and
66265.193. This assessment addresses only the requirements of these code sections for
hazardous waste tank systems. It is not intended to cover compliance of the system, either in
design or operation, with other laws and regulations. This assessment is valid for a period of five
years as specified in Section 66265.192 (h).
3
