21 March 2006
AGE-NC Project No 97-0290
IPage 11 of 15
73 ADVANCEMENT OF SOIL PROBE BORING
On 25 and 30 January 2006, two soil probe borings (B101 and B102)were advanced in the former
UST excavation under EHD oversight The probe borings were advanced to a total depth of 55 feet
bsg utilizing a van-mounted Geoprobe 5400 direct-push probing unit equipped with 1 25-inch
diameter probing rods, the probing unit advances soil probe borings using a hydraulic hammer to
Idrive soil and ground water sampling tools to specified depths
7 3 1 Soil Sample Collection
Discrete soil samples were collected 5-foot intervals, beginning at 15 feet bsg, using the Geoprobe
I push-driven 2-inch diameter soil sampler fitted with four 6-inch long brass sleeves Soil samples
were preserved by covering both ends of the second brass sleeve with Teflon sheets, capping, and
sealing with tape Each preserved sample sleeve was labeled with soil boring location, depth, time,
date, and sampler's initials and was stored in a chilled container under ice
Soil encountered in the borings was visually classified on a boring log by an AGE geologist in
accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) Additionally, soil samples from
boring B 101 were field-screened for the presence of volatile organic compounds using an organic
vapor meter (OVM) equipped with a photo-ionization detector(PID Thermo Environmental 580,
10 0 eV, calibrated to isobutylene), the concentration readings were recorded on the boring logs
7 3 2 Laboratory Analysis of Soil Samples
The soil samples were transported under chain-of-custody procedures to CTEL and analyzed for
• TPH-g and TPH-d in accordance with EPA Method 8015 Modified, and
• BTEX and MTBE in accordance with EPA Method 8260B
7 3 4 Equipment Decontamination
I All probing rods used were cleaned prior to advancement in each probe boring location The
sampling equipment was washed in an Alconox solution and rinsed with water prior to each
sampling run to avoid cross-contamination
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc
