SITE HISTORY
In 1985, Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company (Santa
Fe) purchased some property in Stockton with the intention of
building an interchange track. The site is located on the
east side of the Southern Pacific track near the intersection
of Union Street and East Scotts Avenue in Stockton (Figure
1) . The new property line was discovered to bisect an
underground vault and a storage tank. In December, 1987, Cal
Tank Testing excavated soil from around the vault and tank in
order to remove them. During the removal operation, two
more tanks were discovered. The tanks had contained heavy
fuel oils which presumably were used to fire boilers at a Del
Monte Cannery facility which had previously occupied the
adjacent site. The former locations of the vault and tanks
are shown in Figures 2 and 3.
. During the removal of tanks 2 and 3, it was found that
_. these two tanks had leaked an unknown amount of product
through holes in the tank walls. Pooled product at the
bottom of the excavations had to be removed. Soil from the
excavation was used to absorb the product. This soil was
then removed, manifested and hauled to a waste management
facility.
Soil samples were taken below the base of the vault and each
tank before the excavation was backfilled, compacted and
graded. The locations of these samples are shown Lli Figures
2 and 3. The samples were analyzed by the following methods:
• Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons by EPA 8015.
• Benzene, Xylene, Toluene, and Ethylbenzene by
Method 8020,
• HalGgenated Volatile Organics by EPA Method 8010, and
• PCBs by EPA Method 8080.
1
