SITE SPECIFIC HEALTH AND SAFETY PLAN
The only significant site-specific hazards ant''.cipated during
the sampling operation are heat stress if ambient air
temperatures are high, and the hazard prese^r.ed by working
close to an active railroad.
All personnel will work inside the chain-link fence which
separates the work area from the active rails in order to
eliminate the possibility of workers accidently entering the
area of the active railroad tracks.
In order to minimize the hazard of heat stress, protective
clothing will be limited to disposable gloves, hard hat, and
steel-toed boots during sampling operations. The contaminants
themselves present a very low hazard, and gloves will be worn
primarily to avoid cross-contamination between samples. In
addition, work will be initiated as soon after daybreak as
possible. Air temperature will be monitored during sampling
operations, and workers will be instructed to be alert for
signs and symptoms of heat stress. Frequent rest periods
will be taken in a location out of the sun. During rest
periods, workers will be instructed to drink plenty of
fluids. Each worker's pulse rate will be monitored during
sampling operations and rest periods. If conditions warrant,
work will be limited to early morning and late afternoon
hours.
Work zones will be established in order to prevent
transportation of contaminants off-site, and to protect
sampling personnel and the general public. The proposed work
zones are shown in Figure 1.
A well equipped First-Aid Kit will be available at all times
on site for minor injuries.
