K
I
J
1111:11151Jill
1
INTRODUCTION
In 1985, Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company (Santa
3?e) purchased some property in Stockten with the intention of
building an interchange track. It was discovered that the
new property line bisected an underground vault and two
storage tanks. In December., 1987, Cal Tank Testing excavated
soil from around the tanks in order to remove them. In the
process of removing the tanks, another tank was discovered.
The tanks had contained heavy fuel oils which presumably were
used to fire boilers at a Del Monte Cannery facility which
had previously occupied the adjacent site.
During tank removal, it was found that two of the tanks had
leaked. Pooled product at the bottom of the excavations had
to be removed. Soil from the excavation was used to absorb
the: product. This soil was then removed and hauled to a
waste management facility. Soil samples were taken at
locations 2 feet below the base of each tank before the
excavation was backfilled, compacted and graded. Sg r f
those samples were contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons.
However no volatile r 2, cs, PCB's, benzgne, o uene.
xylene or ethylbenzene were found (See Appendix) .
SITE DESCRIPTION
The site is located on the east side of the Southern Pacific
track near the intersection of Union Street and Scotts Avenue
in Stockton (Figure 1) . Access to the site will be through
the Valley Welding Supply yard at 1033 E. Scotts Avenue, and
through the adjacent property of Lanny R. Williams.
SCOPE OF WORK
The scope of this work is to determine the vertical and
horizontal extent of any contamination that may have remained
following removal of the tanks. This investigation will
involve 10 borings below and adjacent to the backfill
material (Figure 2) .
Given the nature of the contaminants, it is unlikely that
lateral movement of the contaminants has been significant
unless the products have reached the groundwater. When the
contaminants reach the groundwater, lateral movement will be
increased because the vertical component of movement is
eliminated due to the lower density of the petroleum
contaminants. Groundwater was not encountered during tank
removal observations, and is not expected to be encountered
above about 30 feet. Vertical movement of the contaminants
is possible due to gravitational potential. However, overall
movement of the contaminants should be limited by their high
viscosity and by the high clay content soils in the area.
