OWN
Boring 06. (Boring # 6 was terminated adepth
o deota avoid possible
f 35 feet without
obtaining a clean bottom-of-the-hole sample i
contamination of groundwater.) In samples where oil was visible,
detections were as highppm
The verticaxtent of the contarc'.nation can be estimated from
Figure 1-5. Although groundwater was not ;.countered, it is l e
probably only a few feet below the deepest borings. Since the bottom-
of-the-hole. sample in Boring 6 was found to be contaminated, some
oil may have impacted the groundwater.
Tine horizontal extent of the contamination can be roughly estimated
from the analytical results if movement of the oil has been
predominantly downward. Borings 1, 2, and 8 encountered no
contaminated soil on the north and west sides of the sampling site.
These findings suggest that lateral movement of the oil has been
limited. In addition, the deepest contaminated soil (Boring 6) was
found directly below one of the tanks where the highest concentration
of TPHs were found in the previous suggests thatinvestigation.
ateral movement of
obtained during this investigation sugg
the oil would be greater in one direction than in any another. Thus,
plymuch
the lateral extent of the contaminantThesme bo ngsomay haextenve been
beyond the other perimeter borings.
closer to the leaks in the tanks, or the tanks may have been closer to
the eastern most borings than previous drawings indicated.
R.EMEDL4L ACTION
An esianated 1000 to 2000 cubic yards of sail have been affected by the
petroleum product from the former tanks. This soil will have to be
remediated. Since groundwater was not, encountered this
investigation, it is not certain whether the product in the soil has
impacted the groundwater. It is important to determine if, and to
what extent the groundwater has been impacted before proceeding
effort. If the groundwater has not yet been
with any soil remedial
mpacted, then measures to prevent groundwater impact will a :oil
ian
- essential component of the soil remediation. If,product from the
hed the groundwater,
has reacthen groundwater remediation may
also be necessary in conjunction with sail remediation efforts.
1-11
