PHS/EHD has prepared the following comments for your
consideration.
The preliminary investigation was initiated in July 1993 to determine the extent of soil and/or
groundwater contamination which resulted from former leaking underground storage tanks
that were removed in March 1991. The investigation included drilling and sampling of eight
soil borings, three of which were converted into monitoring wells. Both soil and groundwater
contamination were evidenced by laboratory analysis of soil and groundwater samples
collected in July and August of 1993. The gradient direction was to.the southeast.
Please be informed that quarterly groundwater monitoring is recognized as a minimum
reporting requirement. The groundwater should be measured and sampled immediately.
Please note that inspections of sampling events are an important aspect of local regulatory
oversight. PHS/EHD should be provided with at least 48 hours notice prior to the sampling
event, so that an inspection may be scheduled. Also, a survey of wells within 2000 feet
should be performed in order to ascertain if there are nearby wells that could influence the
groundwater gradient.
The extent of groundwater contamination should be determined by the installation and
sampling of additional monitoring wells. Also, the extent of soil contamination at 30 feet
below ground surface to the north of the site is unknown; therefore, an additional soil boring
and/or monitoring well will be necessary to define contamination documented in this area.
A ni%iNmn of bn)natjuln f uumy Iiralth tare ti mics
