PHSIEHD has discussed with
the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board the site information and the
recommendations for further work in the report.
Additional site investigation and feasibility testing is needed. It was estimated that .837 kg of
MTBE remain in the soil at the site. MTBE was not detected in the groundwater sample collected
from boring 132. Therefore, one soil vapor extraction (SVE)well should be installed with a screen
interval of 18 to 43 feet below surface grade (bsg). At least two soil samples should be collected
during drilling for the vapor extraction well for soil and waste extraction testing (WET). One
sample should be collected at 18 feet bsg and the other sample should be collected at 32 feet
bsg. The soil and WET samples must be analyzed for MTBE to compare leachable
concentrations. The WET should be performed with deionized water and all samples should be
analyzed using EPA Method 8260B.
Once the SVE well is installed an 8-hour SVE test should be conducted to determine if sufficient
contaminant mass remains to justify installation of a SVE system. At least three air samples
(start-up, middle, and end)should be collected during the SVE test for analysis and the samples
analyzed for constituents of concern including MTBE by EPA Method 82606.
A work plan detailing the above work should be submitted to PHSIEHD by December 6, 2001.
