SOIL VAPOR EXTRACTION PILOT TEST
Following the vapor well installation, an eight-hour SVE pilot study is proposed for evaluation of
SVE as a remedial alternative. The results of the SVE pilot test should provide data to calculate if
sufficient mass ofMTBE can be extracted to evaluate SVE as a remedial option.
The test will be conducted using a vapor extraction system (VES), VACLEEN 1000G, manufactured
by Environmentai Techniques. The VES consists of a positive-displacement blower, driven by an
internal combustion (IC) engine. The inlet of the VES will be connected to a single soil vapor
extraction well. A Magnehelic vacuum gauge will be attached to the SVE well to measure the
induced vacuum. The air stream from extraction well (influent stream) will be monitored for the
presence of organic vapor using an organic vapor analyzer(OVA) equipped with a photo-ionization
detector (PCD: Thermo Environmental 580A_ 10.0 eV; calibrated to isohut-vlene). The vacuum
applied to the well is anticipated to cause I MTBE and/or hydrocarbons in the soil to volatilize and
flow through the vacuum pump to the IC engine. The extracted hydrocarbon vapor will be destroyed
in the IC engine as part of its internal combustion process. Emissions from the engine (effluent
stream) will be routed thxough two catalytic converters to maximize the destruction of hydrocarbon
vapor. Three "uTrab" soil vapor samples will be collected within Tedlar bags from the inlet to the IC
for analysis. The samples will then be immediately placed in a chilled container for transportation
to a state-cetli Cttcd laboratory. Each air sample will be labeled with sampling time, date and sampler's
initials. The three samples wili be analvzed by a DIIS-certified laboratory for the following
ConsIALICntS:
• TPH-g in accordance with FPA Method 8015;
• BTFX and NITBE in. accordance with EPA Method 8020 and
• Fuel oxygenates including MTBE, TBA, DIPE, ETBE and TAME in accordance with EPA
Method 8260 Modified.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental.Inc.
